Tires SQUEAL.
LEO (V.O.)
No one ever does anything until it's too late.
EXT. CORNER OF 3RD AND MAIN, MIDTOWN- DAY
The busy city street is packed. People in all sorts of attire ranging from casual jeans and plaids to full two-piece business suits and briefcases crowd around the sidewalk and rush onto the street.
SUIT
(screaming)
Call 911!
FLANNEL
What happened?
The crowd, about twelve strong, draws closer -- a forest of legs blocking the view of what they’re looking at with horrified eyes.
HAWAIIAN SHIRT
(Pushing between bystanders)
Let me through!
Hawaiian Shirt drops to his knees and checks for a pulse. A woman swats his hand away.
ATHLEISURE
Don't touch him!
HAWAIIAN SHIRT
(Urgently)
I'm a Doctor!
Traffic is at a standstill. Further back, cars are honking.
There's a Sedan with a cracked windshield frozen in the middle of the street, a trail of skid marks oozing from behind the tires.
A man is crouched next to the car, holding his hands to his shell-shocked face.
Hawaiian Shirt screams encouragements at body in the street as he slams a fist onto the victim’s ribcage. His body positioned between the road and the victim.
Hawaiian Shirt is crying. He doesn’t give up.
Sticking out between a gap in the crowd is a size 6 children's sneaker.
CUT TO:
Across the street, one person isn't moving. LEO (29) a man dressed in jeans and a loose-fitting shirt.
He has his hands in his pockets and is staring impassively at the scene in front of him.
LEO (V.O.)
I mean. I’ve tried.
CUT TO:
Multiple shots of Leo saving THE KID (14), a boy in an oversized sweater, jeans that are just starting to get ratty, and a sun-bleached backpack. All the clips are at the same time of day and with the same people in the background. The only thing that changes--besides Leo’s method--is his shirts.
The Kid’s got his head down, a gray and faded set of earbuds in. He steps out. Leo grabs into the pack.
The Kid’s arm.
His shoulder.
Leo casually stretches an arm out to block The Kid from in front.
He trips The Kid.
Leo holds The Kid over his head like the lift in Dirty Dancing; The Kid's legs kick uncomfortably.
CUT TO BLACK.
LEO (V.O.)
And then I got to wondering--
Leo taps a random woman on the shoulder. She looks at him.
He points to The Kid standing next to her.
The Kid steps out and the woman grabs onto him.
CUT TO:
Leo shoves The Kid into the road.
Leo shoves the woman standing next to The Kid into the road.
Leo's driving the car.
Leo raises his hands to push The Kid again. He hesitates.
LEO (V.O)
If any of it even mattered?
CUT TO:
Leo looks at The Kid, his face melts into something more compassionate.
The Kid shifts his weight.
Leo places his hand on the Kid’s shoulder and gently stops him.
LEO
Hey, tomorrow, could you look before crossing?
The Kid stares at Leo for a second.
Their eyes meet.
Recognition dawns on the Kid’s face; it scrunches up in disgust.
The Kid yanks his shoulder away before storming into the street with the rest of the Pedestrians.
END.
